Lanning misses game v Pakistan with shoulder injury

Cricket Australia has today advised that Meg Lanning will miss Australia’s ICC Women’s World Cup match against Pakistan today due to aggravating a chronic shoulder injury.

Cricket Australia’s Board have endorsed a recommendation from the National Selection panel to make Rachael Haynes captain in Lanning’s absence, whilst Alex Blackwell will remain vice-captain.

Haynes, 30, has played 34 ODI’s for Australia having scored a total of 832 runs at an average of 32.

Australian Women’s Team Physiotherapist, Kate Mahony said: “Meg has been undergoing rehabilitation on her right shoulder, following a chronic injury. The decision for Meg to miss today's match will enable her to focus on some rehabilitation and we’ll continue to monitor her ahead of taking part in any further matches in the tournament.”

Speaking on the selection of Haynes, National Selector, Shawn Flegler said: “Rachael has a wealth of leadership experience including successfully guiding Victoria to back-to-back national Twenty20 titles and alongside Alex, will ensure the team is led to continue their current form. We know that Rachael is capable of coming in and doing the job that is asked of her as she demonstrated in New Zealand earlier this year when she scored a half-century after a lengthy absence from the national side.”

Pakistan guilty of slow over rate

Pakistan has been found guilty of maintaining a slow over rate during its ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 match against England in Leicester on Tuesday.

Richie Richardson of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees imposed the sanction after Sana Mir’s side was ruled to be one over short of its target when time allowances were taken into consideration.

As per Appendix 3 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel there is no financial penalty against the Pakistan players, however, if Pakistan commits a second minor over-rate offence during the event with Sana as captain, then she will be suspended for one match.

India and New Zealand win on opening day

New Zealand swept aside Sri Lanka in their opening game of the WWC17, chasing down 188/9 for the loss of just one wicket. Sri Lanka had been looking good at 143/1, but crumbled as Holly Huddleston helped herself to 5/35. In reply the Kiwis lost Rachel Priest early on but skipper Suzie Bates (106*) and Amy Satterthwaite (78*) saw them home in the 38th over.

In the other opener India shocked England winning by 35 runs, having blasted 281/3 in their 50 overs. Smriti Mandhana looked in fine form for her 90, as did Mathali Raj (71), but England were off-colour with the ball and in the field. With the bat they started poorly too, losing Beaumont, Taylor and Sciver to be 67/3, but Heather Knight (46) and Fran Wilson (81) rebuilt and when Katherine Brunt (24) added some impetous England were in with a shout needing 76 off the last 10 overs, but a series of run outs cost England, notably the unfortunate run out of Wilson with her bat over the line, but in the air.

South Africa crush West Indies &
Australia cruise past Pakistan

South Africa bowled out West Indies for a paltry 63, and then chased down their target in 19 overs. Masabata Klaas helped herself to 4/14 and there were three run outs as the Windies' batting disintergrated. Laura Wolvaardt (26) and Lizelle Lee (18) looked to have it all under control in response, but both fell within a short space of each other and Trisha Chetty and Chloe Tryon followed in successive balls to Anisa Mohammed, but with so few runs on the board South Africa eased home.

Australia finished their warm-ups with another convincing victory, restricting Pakistan to 156 all out in nearly 47 overs and then knocking them off with Beth Mooney retiring on 60 and Meg Lanning ending 40*. They will have sterner tests to come.

England crush Kiwis &
India stifle Sri Lanka

England bowled New Zealand out for just 130 in just over 38 overs and then knocked off the runs for the loss of three wickets (including the retirement of Lauren Winfield with a back spasm) to set down a significant marker ahead of Saturday's first match. Only Satterthwaite, Martin and Green got into double figures for the Kiwis, as Anya Shrubsole (2/11) made the early inroads and Laura Marsh (3/7) made sure that New Zealand got little or no batting practice. In reply Tammy Beaumont (51*) and Lauren Winfield (27) put on 45 for the first wicket before lunch. Winfield failed to reappear after the break, but it mattered little as Nat Sciver (38) took England to the brink of victory before she and Dani Wyatt fell in quick succession. But England got over the line in the 28th over.

Meanwhile England's opening opponents India had an easy day of things against a lacklustre Sri Lanka. India made 275/8 from their 50 overs with Mithali Raj top scoring with 85, and openers Poonam Raut (69) and Smriti Mandhana (44) spending some useful time at the crease. The Sri Lanka reply was more about batting practice than it was about trying to win the game. They ended up well short with their run rate never exceeding four an over. Dilani Manodara top scored for Sri Lanka with 49, but off 83 balls.

Australia pile on the runs against Saffers &
Pakistan stun West Indies

In the first of two warm-up games today the Australians amassed 324/5 against the South Africans, thanks to 137 from Elyse Villani, and 67 from Ellyse Perry. Having made her 100 Villani was brutal on the South African attack, who conceded 67 off the last five overs. The chase never looked like being on after Lizelle Lee was run out in the first over of the South African reply. They were eventually bowled out for 221 with good contributions from Trisha Chetty (62) and Dane van Niekerk (54). Nadine de Klerk hit a sprightly 32 off 22 balls as the fell well short. Jess Jonassen picked up 3/22.

In the second game Pakistan held their nerve to reach a target of 247 set by the West Indies with 14 balls to spare. Nain Abidi (81*) and Bismah Maroof (75) set up the win with a 4th wicket partnership of 141. Kainat Imtiaz smashed 14 off seven balls to get Pakistan over the line when it looked like they may be labouring. The West Indies total of 246/7 was based around 59 from Felicia Walters and 43 from Merissa Aguilleira, but their run rate proved to be too pedestrian.

England and New Zealand win opening warm-up games in some comfort

Both England and New Zealand had comfortable victories in their first official warm-up games, handing 8 wicket and 7 wicket defeats to Sri Lanka and India, respectively.

England bowled out Sri Lanka for 155 in 47.2 overs, with all the England bowlers used claiming at least one wicket. Chief destroyer was Anya Shrubsole who took 3/27. In reply openers Lauren Winfield (35) and Tammy Beaumont (31) put on 66 for the first wicket, and when they were out the good work was carried on by Sarah Taylor (49*) and skipper Heather Knight (32*). England got home in the 31st over.

New Zealand claimed bragging rights over India after they bowled them out for just 130 in 45.1 overs. Anna Peterson (2/14), Erin Bermingham (2/20) and Hannah Rowe (2/25) were all amongst the wickets, with only Punam Raut (31), Mona Meshram (30*) and Mithali Raj (21) making double figures for the Indians. In reply New Zealand made steady progress through Rachel Priest (52) and Suzie Bates (32), putting on 72 for the first wicket. Bates and then Satterthwaite then went, but Priest completed her half century before she too fell to Poonam Yadav (2/19). Katie Martin (29*) and Sophie Devine (20*) saw the White Ferns home in the 27th over.

India sack their Head Coach 2 months before the tournament starts - details

The BCCI have sacked former India coach, Purnima Rau, and replaced her with Tushar Arothe, the former Baroda batsman, who has been in charge of the Women's team before, back in 2012. Rau claims that she was not even told by the BCCI that she had been sacked, and claimed that it was the doing of Diana Edulji, one of the four members of the Committee of Administrators, who are now running the BCCI. "She has been vindictive always", said Rau. However Edulji states that the change was made at the behest of senior players, Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami and Harmanpreet Kaur, who said that they wanted a man in charge.
Whatever the reason it is not the build up that the Indians would have wanted to the tournament.

She has indicated that she wants to be considered for T20 and Test cricket, but her name was not amongst the proposed list of contracted players for 2017/2018 announced recently by Cricket Australia.
